CarePortal Ministry at Work

"Lord, when did we see you… and did not help you?" He will reply, "Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.”
Matthew 25:44–45

At St. Mary Magdalene & St. Martin, we believe that Christ calls us to love not just in word, but in action—and the CarePortal Ministry is one of the most tangible ways we live out that call.

CarePortal connects us directly with families in need—many of them referred by social workers—giving us the opportunity to offer not just items like cribs, diapers, groceries, or even a small refrigerator, but also the love and presence of Christ. Every request shared through CarePortal is reviewed by our team, and when we're able to respond, we do so not just with goods, but with grace. We always send two church members to deliver items and to offer prayer, encouragement, and a simple reminder: you are not alone.

Sometimes we use church funds designated for outreach. Sometimes donations come from generous supporters beyond our congregation who want to help but aren’t able to go in person. However it happens, each delivery becomes a sacred moment of connection.

One mother recently told us, I don’t have family. I grew up in foster care. All I have is my kids. I had to skip my light bill just to get the baby something. I don’t even have enough to eat sometimes.” Because of this ministry, we were able to bring her children’s clothes, a bassinet, diapers, and hope. Her tears said what words could not.

There’s a saying we hold dear: "You may be the only Bible someone ever reads." In this ministry, our actions speak volumes. One of our members put it perfectly:

“It is better to give than to receive is how this ministry makes us all feel.”

But the need is great—and growing. As Jesus reminded his disciples:
"
The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few." (Matthew 9:37)

We invite you to join us. Whether through prayer, financial support, or hands-on involvement, you can be part of this beautiful ministry that brings comfort, dignity, and God's love to families right here in our community.

Let us be the Church—not just inside our sanctuary, but out in the world.

a lot of people sitting in pews on Sunday morning are carrying doubt they've never said out loud, because they're not sure the church can handle it.

We have spent a long time domesticating the Holy Spirit reducing it to a warm feeling. But the Spirit in John 20 is something else, something that doesn'twait.

Read the second chapter of Acts carefully and you will notice something the Sunday school version tends to smooth over: the disciples were not ready.

Jesus says he won't leave us orphaned. But some weeks, that promise is held by faith alone. A reflection for the Sixth Sunday of Easter.

Stephen is about to die. He knows it. The stones are already in people's hands. And he looks up, and someone is standing. That is a claim about the nature of God

When we gather around the Eucharist table every Sunday, we are continuing a practice that was, from its very beginning, a political act.
